Finland is located in the north-eastern part of Europe. It is the seventh largest country in Europe with the area of about 340 000 square kilometers. The population of the country is over 5,3 million people (Census 2007). Most of the territory of the country is situated between the 60th and 70th parallel. The state borders on Sweden in the west, Norway in the north and Russia in the east. The southern and western shores of the country are washed by the Gulf of Finland and by the Gulf of Bothnia. Vast territories of Finland can be characterized by the diversity of climate, landscape and wildlife. Finland is sometimes called the land of lakes, as it has about 150 000 small and big lakes on its territory. The capital of the state is Helsinki, which is located in the south on the shore of the Gulf of Finland and is considered to be a big passenger port with several ferry terminals, operating international transportation to many European countries all year round. Finland is a member of the European Union and Schengen Agreement.
